Jenny Wright on RDA in Information Professional

Jenny Wright

BDS Chief Metadata Officer, Jenny Wright has co-authored an article in Information Professional, published through CILIP.

RDA: Moving into a new era of metadata management is prompted by the forthcoming introduction of a new version of the RDA standard, due to launch on 15 December. Jenny and her co-authors, Alan Danskin, Collection Metadata Standard Manager at the British Library and Gordon Dunsire, RDA Technical Team Leader Liaison Officer, are keen to utilise multiple channels to promote and explain the new version of the RDA standard which “takes us firmly into the future of metadata requirements.”

“The current RDA Toolkit is a decade old, so the tech is outdated, and it is also very obviously print-based in origin,” explains Jenny. “The new RDA Toolkit, which has been in beta for a while, addresses the cataloguing of all types of content and media, and recognises the fact that different users have different needs.”

The RDA Toolkit is a subscription-based online platform that allows cataloguers to access guidelines and instructions for creating RDA records. The new Toolkit will be found at: access.rdatoolkit.org as of 15 December, while the content referencing the older version of RDA will be found at: original.rdatoolkit.org.

RDA: Moving into a new era of metadata management has certainly proved helpful to cataloguers and garnered praise.

“For six years I have been working with RDA and have often thought there was need for a clear, written exposition of what RDA actually is,” wrote Lesley Cresswell, Collections Librarian, Library and Learning Resources, University of Wales, Trinity Saint David. “Your article is the first account I have come across that actually explains RDA in a sensible and logical way. Thank you for doing this.”

Look out for more information about the new RDA standard in the next issue of BDSlife magazine as well as the sharing of knowledge and expertise through events organised by EURIG and UKCoR and training seminars dedicated to explaining concepts and demonstrating aspects of the new Toolkit.

There is an EURIG RDA Switchover event on 16th December. People wishing to attend online should write to jenny.wright@bdslive.com to receive a link.
